THIS WILL NOT DO FOR JOSIAH WEDGWOOD
Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), the man who revolutionised the North Staffordshire Potteries, combined high standards, business acumen and brilliant technical innovation. When I was at university in the area, I walked over the ruins of his old pottery in Etruria; some years earlier it had moved to a modern factory in Barlaston.
Wedgwood used to go round his factory inspecting the day's work. If he saw something that wasn't up to standard he would knock it to the ground with his stick saying, "This will not do for Josiah Wedgwood." Grayson Perry follows the same principle, saying the potter's most useful tool is a hammer.
